Word Study on "North"
Summary
The north, when it has spiritual significance in the Bible, identifies with the kingdom of Satan.
Examples
The north is the direction from which evil comes:
"O ye children of Benjamin, gather yourselves to flee out of the midst of Jerusalem, and blow the trumpet in Tekoa, and set up a sign of fire in Bethhaccerem: for evil appeareth out of the north, and great destruction." (Jeremiah 6:1)
"Then the LORD said unto me, Out of the north an evil shall break forth upon all the inhabitants of the land." (Jeremiah 1:14)
The north identifies with that which is at war against God's people:
"Thus saith the LORD, Behold, a people cometh from the north country, and a great nation shall be raised from the sides of the earth. They shall lay hold on bow and spear; they are cruel, and have no mercy; their voice roareth like the sea; and they ride upon horses, set in array as men for war against thee, O daughter of Zion." (Jeremiah 6:22-23)
The north identifies with the kingdom that brings desolation:
"Behold, the noise of the bruit is come, and a great commotion out of the north country, to make the cities of Judah desolate, and a den of dragons." (Jeremiah 10:22)
The north identifies with Satan's desire to rule: "How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north" (Isaiah 14:12-13)
The north is the direction from which oppression on God's people comes:
"For, lo, I will call all the families of the kingdoms of the north, saith the LORD; and they shall come, and they shall set every one his throne at the entering of the gates of Jerusalem, and against all the walls thereof round about, and against all the cities of Judah." (Jeremiah 1:6)
Rain represents the Gospel as it brings forth a spiritual harvest. The wind from the north is that which stops the rain:
"The north wind driveth away rain: so doth an angry countenance a backbiting tongue." (Proverbs 25:23)
