Word Study on "Moon"
When it has spiritual significance, the word "moon" is used to represent the law of God.
Before we become saved we are under the law of God:
“But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed.” (Galatians 3:23)
Once we become saved we are no longer under law of God:
“But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.” (Galatians 5:18)
Instead, once we are saved we have come under the grace of God:
“For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.” (Romans 6:14)
“To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.” (Galatians 4:5)
God’s people are typified by a woman in Revelation chapter 12. Since the believers are not under the law the woman is spoken of as having the moon under her feet:
“And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars” (Revelation 12:1)
We read that when the final judgment comes the moon will be turned into blood:
“And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood” (Revelation 6:12)
“The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and notable day of the Lord come” (Acts 2:20)
“The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the LORD come.” (Joel 2:31)
Blood points to God’s judgment and it is the law that judges man:
“For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law” (Romans 2:12)
“So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.” (James 2:12)
The moon being turned into blood at the end signifies that the finalization of judgment on man has arrived.
